Mullein is a biennial herbaceous plant. Plants are unbranched and can grow to more than 2 m tall.
First year plants develop as a basal rosette. Basal leaves are 10-30 cm long, and 2.5-12 cm wide and covered with woolly hairs. Stem leaves are decurrently alternate and decrease in size towards the apex.
It has five-petaled, yellow flowers that develop at the apex of the shoot.
