Oregano is an aromatic, woody-based perennial, which grows to 20-90 cm in height.
Its leaves are ovate with the wider end at the base 10-40 mm long and 5-25 mm wide, and borne opposite each other on the stem.
The young stems are typically square and hairy and become woody with age.
The flowers are small and borne in clusters; they range in colour from white to pink or pale purple.
